The Art of Drawing

The Art of Drawing honors the traditions of draughtsmanship over the last five centuries, including works by Old Master, European, Modernist, Contemporary, and Ohio artists.

The oldest work in the exhibition is Luca Cambiaso’s Woman with Four Children from the mid-1560s, which scholars have suggested is a study executed in preparation for the artist’s "Return of Ulysses" fresco in Genoa’s Palazzo Grimaldi della Meridiana.

More modern works in the exhibition include drawings by Lyonel Feininger and local Ohio artist William Sommer. Sommer’s Wire Haired Girl and Cat is particularly indicative of the artist’s quirky aesthetic and unique regional cubist mannerism.

Cumulatively, the drawings featured offer insight into a variety of artistic processes and range in prices from $200 to $15,000.
