Yoshiwara courtesan Urazato is in love with her client, Tokijiro, which is strictly forbidden.  Tokijiro runs up such a bill he cannot pay it, so the brothel owner, Yamana-ya, banishes Tokijiro, and forbids Urazato from seeing her lover. Despite this, one snowy evening, Urazato goes into the garden to meet Tokijiro, but is discovered and beaten by her employer.  It is only later that Tokijiro is able to rescue both Urazato and his child, the young apprentice Midori.
